We spent American Independence Day entirely in Scotland, which seemed fairly fitting! We had a little down-time in the morning — while it rained outside — trying to get a little done on our travel journal. We then drove north, and stopped for a bit at Huntingtower Castle, a medieval castle where you can climb up the towers and look around a bit. James VI was held prisoner here for eight months, back in 1582; when the kidnappers were caught, the castle and land was taken from them and held by by the crown for nearly a hundred years, until it was given to another family.

The next part of our journey was through the Cairngorms National Park, and it was just wonderful! We’d been wanting to visit Scotland, and though we only have a short time there on this trip, we wanted to take in what stark beauty we could on the road.
